In this letter, written on 5 July, 1691 in Athlone, we learn of the 'fortuitous approach' of the combined forces of William and Mary into the fortress Athlone-- the major crossing-point of the River Shannon.
Although the tide of the war in Ireland altered significantly when Athlone Castle and bridge fell, this victory for the allied forces is not known in Denmark until three weeks later. In the second letter of the series, we learned how reinforcements were being shipped from Denmark only two days before this letter was written in Athlone. Those fresh recruits were making the journey to Ireland to ‘seek their adventure and further their advancement‘, according to the Dutch ambassador in Copenhagen.
Once Athlone fell, we learn from the general that Roscommon, Lanesborough and Sligo were also quit by the forces loyal to King James.
We also hear about the French commander of the forces loyal to King James, Charles de Claremont, Marquis de St. Ruth, and the French General D'Usson, commander of Athlone Castle, were both ‘entertaining ladies’ at the time the castle was overrun. ‘He must not have feared the loss of the fort’, the Dutch general writes to his father.
-------This is the second program in a series of the recordings made of hand-written correspondence between a Dutch-born officer serving as commander of William III & Mary II's forces at land and at sea in Ireland 1690-1691, and an aged Utrechtse statesmen in the service of the States General of the Dutch Republic serving overseas as envoy at the court of Christian V of Denmark : his father.
