This is me when I visited Tomioka, zone 2, in Fukushima, Japan for the first time. Approx 9 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi powerplant. I joined a studytour organized by an NGO called Green Cross. After this visit I went back four times, spread over 3 years. In total I've spend about 8 weeks in the affected zones of Fukushima prefecture after the nuclear disaster. I did several art projects and I wrote a book on my observations. Right now this book is only available in Dutch. The title is 'Het gevaar van angst - hypochonderen in Fukushoma' ('Dangers of fear - hypochondria in Fukushima') At this moment I am the only person in the world who reported from the affected zones after staying there for a longer time. Most journalists and artists and filmmakers only visit for a few hours. This is one of the reasons that most reports contain a lot of wrong information. This is why one of my goals is to fix that! I'm planning to go back later this year to continue a large art project in the red zone, close to the powerplant. (8 up, and 3 down, under the ground) filled with clothing factories collapsed. 1138 people died and many were hurt and disabled for life. One year after the disaster I went to the ruins of the Rana Plaza building and noticed that nothing had been done to honor the victims. So I thought of a plan to show (my) respect. The site was still filled with the remains of clothes from the factories, full of dirt ofcourse. So my first idea was to collect all these clothes, wash them and hang them to dry on clothing lines. Unfortunately I did not get the permission to do this (or do anything!) at or around the site. This was because it would raise attention to the situation and this was exactly the opposite of what the local government wanted to happen.
