Monsanto's Dirty Dozen: The company's Top 12 most awful products created. In case you missed it, the World Health Organization declared Monsanto's flagship herbicide to be a probable human carcinogen based on their IARC review of published scientific studies which have found that it causes cancer in laboratory animals as well as establishing a link to Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Monsanto sells over $5 billion worth of Roundup a year. More blood on their hands.

SERMO, the largest online community of physicians, found that a strong majority (68%) of physicians surveyed support mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods. This past April, SERMO polled physicians to gain insight on how important GMO labeling may be to the medical world by asking “Should food manufacturers be required to label products containing GMOs? Of 2,097 physician answers, 68% selected yes and 32% selected no. Of the top eleven states polled, New York ,California and Florida were the top three in favor of required labeling. Without a label, there is no traceability, no accountability and no liability. GMO LABELING IS DOCTOR RECOMMENDED.

Kellogg's has been having a really hard time selling any of their products. Their "health" brands aren't faring so well either. Why? Three letters: GMO. Kellogg's, for some reason, just won't get rid of Monsanto's GMOs in their products. The majority of GMO crops grown today are genetically engineered to withstand the repeated spraying of Roundup glyphosate-based weedkiller, a Class 2A Probable Human Carcinogen according to the World Health Organization. That means the GMO food-like stuff in that box of Special K likely is laced with glyphosate. Real Special, eh?

"10 reasons we don't need GM foods", a short report from the authors of "GMO Myths and Truths", is a free download by the sustainability and science policy platform Earth Open Source.

Claire Robinson, co-author of the new report with genetic engineers Dr Michael Antoniou and Dr John Fagan, said:
"At just 11 pages plus references, '10 reasons' is designed for people who may not have the time to read 'GMO Myths and Truths', which extends to 330 pages. '10 reasons' is ideal for giving to friends, family, politicians, and journalists, when a longer document is not appropriate.

" '10 reasons' explains that GM crops do not increase yield potential or reduce pesticide use. Nor can they help us meet the challenges of climate change any better than existing non-GM crops, or deliver more nutritious foods. GM crops have been shown to have toxic effects on laboratory and farm animals.

"There is only one way in which GM crops outperform non-GM crops: they are easier to patent in a way that guarantees ownership not only of that GM plant variety but also all plants bred from it. This process enables consolidated ownership of the seed and food market by a few large companies on a scale that has never happened before.

"That is a recipe for loss of food sovereignty and security. It is the opposite to feeding the world – the line we are constantly fed to justify the introduction of GM crops."

The EU has long had a much more skeptical view of genetically modified organisms than the U.S. and has heavily restricted their trade. The European Commission last month proposed giving individual member states the ability to opt out of any decisions it made to expand the heavily restricted list of genetically modified grains allowed into the EU. The move, which was accompanied by a decision to authorize 19 more GM products for distribution in the EU, was widely seen as a political fudge meant to accommodate public opposition to GMOs in countries such as France and Germany. But it immediately drew an angry reaction from the U.S. Officials in Washington have since not only expressed anger about the impact on efforts to secure a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) but also have raised the possibility of bringing the EU to the World Trade Organization if the proposal becomes law. “The EU’s decision potentially... creates a serious obstacle to meeting the challenge of global food security,” Tom Vilsack told the FT. “The point is if you’re going to establish a trade relationship and you are committed to open trade, you are committed to a science-based system... you can’t inject the culture or the politics or consumer choice into the discussions.”

Tom Vilsack, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and 2001 Biotech Governor of the Year, doesn't believe in democracy. He thinks it's OK to ram GMOs down the throats of consumers in countries that don't want them. He continues to push the TTIP, which would abolish GMO labeling in those countries as a barrier to trade. BULLY. INTIMIDATE. THREATEN. NOT PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.
