My great-grandmother Addie Young (and her sons and grandson) moving turkeys into the yard. Our family had a turkey farm, raising thousands of birds a year. Addie was a shrewd businesswoman, too. An old timer told me 20 years ago that the best way to overwinter carrots is in the ground (like parsnips). During the January thaw, I dig out enough to get us to spring, when I did the balance. At 45F, today qualified as a January thaw and I had good luck digging!
