IMHO songs are all about the melody! You can just mumble and if the melody is interesting you got something. 

A Pakastani woman at work played some of her native music. I said, "How can you play that it is so very sad?" I could not understand the lyrics, so that left only the melody. I was correct it was a very sad song.
