I think DS2 is mechanically clearly superior. Which I think also should be expected, since it is the latter title.
I get the sense that the general sentiment is that this is balanced by the better world design, lore and characters of DS1. I would agree, but only to a degree. I terms of world design, the overarching idea of DS1 is more interesting, with an interconnected world rather than a hub-based world. The wide use of shortcuts and similar also is a point in DS1's favour to me. However, the world of DS2 has a better pacing and looks better to me.
The lore of DS1 is much better understood. The central conflict is given in the opening cut-scene, and then subtly elaborated on throughout the game. In DS2 on the other hand, the central conflict is much less clear. DS2 is to a far greater degree left to interpretation - perhaps a little too much - which I think makes it harder to get into.
