What Is An Arowana?
Arowanas are large freshwater fish which have bony heads and elongated bodies. There are 10 different kinds of arowanas: four can be found in Southeast Asia, three in South America, two in Australia, and one from Africa.
Known as the “King of Tropical Fish”, these fish are big – the South American arapaima (also known as pirarucu) can grow up to 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) in length,
Making it one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet – and are capable of performing extraordinary feats that few other fish can match.
For example, the South American species of arowana are known to be able to jump up to 6 feet (2 meters) clear out of the water to snag birds or insects – all arowana species are carnivorous – from overhanging tree branches.
They have even been rumored to be able to catch and eat low flying bats. Such behavior explains why some people have nicknamed arowanas as “water monkeys”.
Arowanas are dutiful parents; some species build nests and protect their young long after they hatch, while others keep their eggs in their mouths to keep them safe.
Arowanas are highly-prized aquarium fish, especially in Asian countries. The Chinese believe that the Southeast Asian arowanas, specifically the extremely rare red arowana, are lucky and provide positive Feng Shui energy.
They call these fish “dragon fish” as the scales and the color of the fish bring to mind images of the Chinese dragon.
Some people even believe that the fish has magical powers – that it could hear death approaching and detect if someone is thinking bad thoughts about its owner.
Having an arowana or two at home – especially a red arowana – is considered a sign of wealth and prosperity. Indeed, while these fish can be an attractive sight, care must be taken to remember that the highly-prized varieties are endangered species.
