Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by an increased number and/or abnormal type of bacteria in the small bowel, and it is a well-recognized cause of maldigestion and malabsorption, impaired motility or failure of the gastric-acid barrier. Speci?cally, bacteria implicated in SIBO are mainly of the colonic type and predominantly Gram-negative, aerobe and anaerobe species that ferment carbohydrates into gas.
