How to Recognize Brown Patch Fungus

Those ugly brown patches in grass could be caused by a fungus called Rhizoctonia solani or brown patch fungus. It can first be identified as brown spots on individual grass blades, then as the spots grow larger they make the whole blade brown. Get enough of them and they can turn entire sections of grass brown. When they form whole patches, the edge of this patch may be gray or a darker brown. Higher grasses won't have this darker line, and tall fescue in particular won't patch - instead, the entire lawn will start to discolor little by little.
