Glued and ready to carve. These block forms are from figure studies around the town. Made from recycled off cuts of Huon pine collected from workshop bins. I am actually really liking them at this point. I guess that is a good sign of things to come.

A first for me yesterday. Carving some King Billy pine. Like Huon pine it is an old growth tree known to live for thousands of years. Thankfully it is now protected from logging, but was in the past used for boat building through to house construction. This was once again a discarded piece destined to set in flames as kindling. For my practice I feel it to be extremely important to work timber that would otherwise be waste and what a joy it is to run a knife through.

In the year 2011 I published a book 'For Your Pleasure'.
The book contains images of a series of works that show girls that just turned 18 years old, but look a lot younger than they are. The origin of these images is a website with 'barely 18 teen porn' where people (men) pay for footage in which you can see how every day another girl gets beaten up. This is legal and it's popular. The girls posing for these photos get paid for it. But one cound ask oneself: why would an 18 year old girl want to let herself beat up for money? How free of choice is she? Doing this all for your pleasure.
I downloaded the images, printed them on canvas and made embroideries that overlapped these photos which made them look innoncent and sweet. By doing this I created a contrast between the feeling you get when you first look at it and the actual image.

Working on portraits of some of the people of the town. Trying to tell the stories I have heard along the way. I am still amazed by the honesty in people I have just met and the gracious nature in which they invite me into their lives. Not sure if it is the people I am falling for or the amazing town that they live.

Last night I traded some knowledge for some art. Gary is a local artisan and shop owner keen to see how i go about making my knives sharp. I offered to teach him if he wouldn't mind sitting for some portraits. Some great stories shared, drawings done and we ended the night with a sharp knife. Thanks again.

The bench is slowly filling with experiments as I collect stories of the town and materials of the place. I am feeling very thankful that i can still be true to my values of utilising recycled or discarded timber. There is plenty to grab, some of this beautiful timber was on its way to be fire wood. I am all too happy to step in the way of that.
