Regardless of what Jay says (or doesn't say) the fire had already been raging for him and everybody in his life.

While OP's version would have opened up fewer questions, I think Jay's aim was to humanize himself and his family after feeling like Serial had demonized him and mobilized the Internet in a crusade against him.

"Not all your humanity is gone when you do something wrong," he said repeatedly. I think it was his goal to communicate that message, and although I don't think his interview accomplished that goal very well, OP's version wouldn't have humanized him at all.
