On friendship. - @elfivoermans and I have been friends since approx. 100 years. We don’t see each other that often, but when we do, we organise pyjama parties and everything is exactly the same as we were teenagers. When we were 16 yrs old she started her study to become a master in flowerdecoration and flowerart and I went to art school. Later (as in: just a year ago which means over 20 years passed 🙄😬) she also graduated artschool which resulted in seeing eachother more often because we both work in the same field now. But as I mentioned: in essence not much changed. We both see beauty in small things. Visited the pre opening of the Venice Biennale. It was my first time and I’m stil processing everything I saw. Three installations really got to me. The Danish pavillion, the Lithuanian pavillion and the Japanese pavillon. A post on instagram can never cover the real thing (not even close) but if you have the chance to go: visit (al least) these pavillions. The Danish and Lithuanian because they were just ‘complete’. They made you feel a (or the) whole story. The Japanese pavillion was mostly really really poetic and therefor really beautiful. Oh, and the Dutch pavillion? Today exactly ten years ago, this book came from the printer. The publication of 'Dearest TINKEBELL.' was featured in the news worldwide and the numbered edition (1000 pieces) was sold out almost immediately. The book contains approx 800 hatemails that were send to me. But, it doesn't show just that. Next to these letters you'll find all the information that could be find online about the senders of the often violent e-mails. Luckily for the senders the book was made in the year 2008-2009 and at that time there was less private information about people to find as nowaday in most cases. Do I still get e-mails like this? Yes. (I stopped counting after approx. 200.000 hate-emails and messages) But much changed with the years in how we express our anger online. It used to be something you did by e-mail. Later people used Orkut, Facebook, Twitter or by starting online petitions. Todays younger generations rather use Instagram or Snapchat (etcetera) or maybe youtube to show their hate. And yup, I got all that. This weekend I was featured in @volkskrantmagazine in a piece on my weekend-rituals. So this is me in my garden and according to the photo it seems that performing acrobatic tricks with my chickens is my weekend thing. Well, it’s not. (that’s an everyday thing 🙃) My spare time thing (not always in the weekends, but soit) is ‘freestyle gardening’, or at least, that is the name that the writer of this peace, @evahoeke gave to it. (which is fine) It basically means that I order random flower seeds online and I just put them in the ground without bothering if it’s the right season or whatever. So whatever comes up in my Wonderland garden is a surprise. Oh. the piece also says that in summer, winter, rain, sun or snow: every morning, the first thing I do is sit outside for an hour or an hour and a galf and just stare at my garden. So I know exactly what is growing. And I know exactly which insects are where. And ofcourse, I never ever use poison. Not even in the case of caterpillars eating my whole tree in just a few weeks. The Netherlands commemorates the victims of the Second World War and celebrates its liberation on two separate but consecutive days. We remember the Dutch victims of wartime violence on 4 May, and on 5 May we celebrate our freedom. In the context of these events in the year 2013 I was asked (by a local organization called 'De Cultuurwerf') to write a proposal for a temporary artwork in public space in the city of Vlissingen celebrating (our) freedom. My proposal was to build a (temporary) house and place in in the city center. This house would be there for one month and in this house would be inhabited by two people. I wrote that I wanted to show how having a home to live in and to feel at home and safe somewhere is the ultimate freedom. What I didn't write in my proposal was any information on the identity of the temporary inhabitants. And no one asked. I also asked for a grant to pay for the house and to pay my inhabitants a daily fee to be part of my art installation. The city counsel said YES to my proposal. On May fifth in the year 2013 two people moved into a little wooden house in the city center of Vlissingen. This was the moment to introduce the inhabitants to the audience. Their names were Shirac and Ezzedin. Both were so called 'illegal': refugees who did not get a permit to stay in The Netherlands. They were not allowed to live anywhere. And they were not allowed to earn money - as 'illegal persons in The Netherlands' But, by making them part of my artinstallation I transfered their position as 'illegals' into 'people' and part of my art project. Thus, I created a new legal situation in which I had a permit to let them live somewhere and get paid to do so. When the mayor of Vlissingen heard about this (which was on May fifth, the day we celebrate our freedom) he got insanely mad and he threatened to break down the house by driving over it with a bulldozer, personally. This is me with two of my oldest friends. On the left Marleen Klijn aka NONKA aka MEENTJE. She is a graphic and web designer and we go waaaay back. Whenever I need some graphic design done (almost all my books and my nude calendar!) She is the one who does the job and she is awesome in everything she does. On the right you see Anneloes van Gaalen. Anneloes is the founder of indiebrands but before that she wrote for many (like really A LOT!) magazines and she published quite some books. I travel quite a lot and I often travel alone. Also it's common for me to travel to places which are described at 'not so safe'. Yes. I did experience some unfortunate events. But everything always ended up okay. This is me in a car in Guinea Bissau in the year 2011. In front of me you see the driver who had to drive me and two other people (a photographer and a cameraman) from Gambia to Guinea Bissau. So, in this case I wasn't traveling alone, but I was the one in charge. This driver had never left his country (Gambia) before and since I had already made this trip a few times, I was leading the way. At that time there were still checkpoints everywhere in Guinea Bissau after the civil war. This basically meant we had to stop the car every now and then and show our documents and explain what we were doing. /// What we were doing was: bringing two complete IKEA showrooms to a village called Caio' to save a familiy from their poor housing situation' /// The 'rule' was whenever you have to stop at a checkpoint: stay calm, be patient, do what they tell you to do, show your documents and move on when you are allowed to do so. But this driver wasn't patient and he couldn't bare the idea of a women (me) telling him what to do and how to behave. So he kept on showing an obstinately uncooperative attitude towards me and (any!) authority or discipline which brought us in danger a few times. After two days driving and after loosing our passports in the middle of the night becease of his behaviour, I lost my temper. As you can see on the photo, I sat behind him. So at the point we were in a situation in which we were threatened at one of the checkpoints with refusal to go on a boat (which was needed to get back to Gambia) because of this driver: I grabbed his head and started to pound him as hard as I could. He was so shocked that from that moment he did exactly what I said and that is how we finally arrived home safely. Since then I have been warning everyone about my karate
Sometimes I attend special occasions, openings, presentation or other festive events. This weekend I went to the booklaunch of ‘Art, No-Art & Anti-Art’ of art collector and friend Harry Ruhé. What happens, sometimes, during these events is that you get snapped and find your photo in the newspaper a few days later. .. Anyway: buy this book. It’s worth to be part of your bookcollection. This is Cupcake. It's a real horse made into a 'My Little Pony'. The original was made in the 80's and it had roller skates. So I had an exact copy of these skates made in 3d-print. What is also similar is that you could pull off her head and ofcourse she had the real My Little Pony eyes and the exact stance of the original. Cupcake is part of my Baby Bunnie Project in which I make real (pet) animals into toys. This as an illustration on how there exists a whole industry of creating (breeding) pets, making them look as 'perfect' as possible. Not for the well being of the animals, but because we think it's cute. With this we created a world in which pets became fashion items and objects. These photo's were made at Pulse New York Artfair with TORCHGallery and Cupcake was originally sold there to John McEnroe and Patty Smyth but this was later canceled. This is me during my first visit in New York in the year 2011 with @justin_the_painter @pearlalbino and the dear @wouterderuytter The special thing here is that we are all connected to @TORCHGallery (as artists and Pearl as an art dealer). These are human bones and they are unidentified.. They were given to me by family members of some of the victims who died in the Rana Plaza factory building in Bangladesh after it collapsed on April 24 in the year 2013. Around April 20 in the year 2014 I also found one bone myself and I also found many labels of brands that produced their clothes in one of the factories in this building. Around 1138 people died and around 400 bodies are still spread over the ground of Rana Plaza. On April 22 of the year 2014 I saved the dignity of the victims. Victims of Rana Plaza disaster 24-04-2013 REST IN PEACE Our memories are sprayed with a billion tears. We will never forget The text above is placed in a gravestone that I illegally made and placed in front of the Rana Plaza site in Savar, Bangladesh. (on April 23 2014) I did this during the memorial where hundreds of people were mourning one year after 1138 people were killed because of the collapse of this huge building, filled with clothing factories. At that time (and I believe this is still the case) approximately 200 bodies of victims were still, in pieces, spread between the mess and rubble. I did not get governmental permission, but when I arrived with it, people immediately started to help placing the stone. There was nothing else there te remember the victims. Last year I heard that my gravestone was still standing. What you see here is a woman handing me some bones of human victims of the Rana Plaza disaster. This photo was made exactly five years ago. In the second photo you see a man handing me the ramains of more people whom have died in this tragedy. I the third photo you can see clearly some of the brands who had their clothes made in the Rana Plaza factories. I visited the site one year after the disaster when people started to hand me the remains of human victims that were still lying between the rubble... (approx 200 bodies were never 'found' but after a year parts of their bodies were everywhere between the labels, textiles and other remains of the clothing factories) with a clear message: "please tell and show the world what is going on here. these are the remains of our loved ones." Next week it's been six years since the disaster in which this huge building (11 floors!) collapsed and killed 1138 garment workers. After the disaster the Bangladesh accord was made which is meant to make clear agreements on how to create a safe work environment and fair wages for those who make our clothes. This was the first time ever that many brands worked together to create better circumstances for workers in the clothing industry. Unfortunately it is absolutely not sure if the Bangladesh accord will stand. This is me measuring the radiation in Tomioka, Fukushima in the year 2017. (radiation level was low) I've visited the affected zones in Fukushima five times now and I stayed and traveled around in this area for about 8 weeks in total. I did some art projects there and I wrote a book on the situation in Fukushima after the nuclear disaster (in Dutch: Het gevaar van angst - Hypochonderen in Fukushima) Next September I will travel back for a longer period to work on a very large art project in the restricted zone close to the Fukushima Daiichi powerplant and in October I have a small exhibition (with artist talk) on my work there at the Contemporary Art Factory in Kyoto. Today I heard that the gallery got funding from the Dutch embassy in Tokyo to cover my travel expences and I just want to say that I am really greatful because the people, and especcially @valckxbas of the embassy are always extremely supportive which means the world. Next week, on the 24th of April it's been 6 years since the Rana Plaza disaster in Savar, Bangladesh. - A large building with 11 floors. (8 up, and 3 down, under the ground) filled with clothing factories collapsed. 1138 people died and many were hurt and disabled for life. One year after the disaster I went to the ruins of the Rana Plaza building and noticed that nothing had been done to honor the victims. So I thought of a plan to show (my) respect. The site was still filled with the remains of clothes from the factories, full of dirt ofcourse. So my first idea was to collect all these clothes, wash them and hang them to dry on clothing lines. Unfortunately I did not get the permission to do this (or do anything!) at or around the site. This was because it would raise attention to the situation and this was exactly the opposite of what the local government wanted to happen.
