This is me when I visited Tomioka, zone 2, in Fukushima, Japan for the first time. Approx 9 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi powerplant. I joined a studytour organized by an NGO called Green Cross. After this visit I went back four times, spread over 3 years. In total I've spend about 8 weeks in the affected zones of Fukushima prefecture after the nuclear disaster. I did several art projects and I wrote a book on my observations. Right now this book is only available in Dutch. The title is 'Het gevaar van angst - hypochonderen in Fukushoma' ('Dangers of fear - hypochondria in Fukushima')
At this moment I am the only person in the world who reported from the affected zones after staying there for a longer time. Most journalists and artists and filmmakers only visit for a few hours. This is one of the reasons that most reports contain a lot of wrong information. This is why one of my goals is to fix that!

I'm planning to go back later this year to continue a large art project in the red zone, close to the powerplant. I will keep you updated about that.

This is me, building up an artpiece at the Kapelica Gallery in Ljubjana, Slovenia where I had a solo exhibition in the year 2011.
The piece is called 'Sien, Siepje and the Dalmatian'. The artwork is made out of the skin of a cat, a rabbit and a dalmatian dog which are made into building blocks. So, it allows you to use your creativity and create your own animal pet over and over again. Like lego :)

This piece is part of my ALMOST 18+ (for your pleasure) series. In these works I used photo's, all from the same 'barely 18' website. This website showed another girl every day in film and photos (all just 18 years old, but often with much younger looks) while beaten up, usually undressed. Always by the same (older) man. Yes, these girls got paid for this 'job'. But one can ask oneself: what are the circumstances in which an (18 year old) girl decides to let herself beaten up, naked, for the
fun of others?
I collected these photos and made artpieces in which I embroided beautiful delicate flowers around the girls, so that at first glance these images seem just very pretty. But when you take a closer look, you see the sadness and the pain.
All for your pleasure.

I kept this particular piece in my private collection. Seeing (child) abuse and the mistreatment of children is something that breaks my heart.
I want to be reminded of this.

*CUTE* (one out of five) consists of 400 individual childrens portraits printed on used childrens handkerchiefs.
The work was made in the year 2002 after seeing a documentary on the abuse of children in the Netherlands. Statistics showed that one out of five children are or have been abused or mistreated.
According to these numbers 80 of the 400 children in this piece are the victims of child abuse. It is impossible to see which are the ones.

Gisteren werd het programma 'Dit is niet mijn wereld vriend' uitgezonden, waarin ik twee dagen op pad ging met Pegida voorman Edwin Wagensveld.
Ik mocht er vooraf natuurlijk niets over zeggen en het item is al ruim twee maanden geleden opgenomen (net voor het kinderpardon er door was) maar het waren echt vreselijk lange en heftige dagen. Voordat ik Edwin ontmoette ging ik er een beetje vanuit dat er een soort verklaring moest zijn voor zijn haat jegens de Islam. Maar die verklaring, die vond ik niet tijdens de opnamen..
Tot, helemaal op het einde, toen de camera's aan de kant stonden en nadat ik mijn disrespect voor hem zeer helder had uitgesproken. Het was al wat later op de avond, we waren allemaal moet en aten met de hele crew nog iets in de studio. Edwin zat naast me (awkward, ja) en dronk een biertje en kwam nogal los: "hahaha, ja ik heb nooit meer zulke goede zaken gedaan als na dat incident in Keulen met die aanrandingen op oudjaarsavond in 2015. HAHAHAHA iedereen wilde toen peperspray bij me kopen, dat was echt een goede tijd"
Ik stond op en schreeuwde: "DAT IS JE BELANG!!" (Edwin handelt in wapens)
Hij stamelde eerste: "nee joh" en ging stil verder met eten.

Tot na een paar minuten stilte (hij moest er kennelijk even over nadenken): "nee, die peperspray was daardoor binnen no time uitverkocht en nergens meer te bestellen waardoor ik daarna een paar maanden niks meer te verkopen had en dus heb ik er uiteindelijk niks aan verdiend'

Wat ik een beetje lastig vind in het programma is dat mijn mooiste argument de montage niet hebben overleefd. Ik vrees: te moeilijke woorden. En ook het verhaal over mijn vader, daarin is iets niet lekker geknipt. Het lijkt nu alsof ik Edwin gelijk geef in zijn kritiek op mijn moeder, terwijl ik daar fel tegenin ging. Maar goed. details. nuance. Dat is allemaal niet van deze tijd en zeker niet op tv en zeker niet bij Powned.

These women! I met them in the year 2012 at a market at the old town of Manila, Philippines and I've spend hours with them talking about life which basically means: everything.
During my stay, which was about a month, the neighborhood (the market!) was flooded a few times. Water reached up to over 1,2 meters and everything got flushed away.

But every time, these brave ladies just collected all their soaking wet
goods and they hung them to dry so everything could be sold again.

I have a huge respect for these women and all the people there who just keep going dispite of floods (and there are more and heavier floods every year) and the lack of so many things we, here in The Netherlands, would call 'basic needs'. #manila #philippines #floods #climatechange #water #flooded #market #women #powerwoman #respect #travel #traveling #newfriends #TINKEBELL.

Since I can write. (which is quite a long time!) I send a letter (or a postcard or a package) to someone EVERY DAY. I have a special mailroom
in my house with many books filled with stamps, special writing paper, envelopes, a typewriter, stickers, decoration tape, hundreds of pens and
everything imaginable that can be used in the art of letterwriting.
How I decide whom to write? It depends on my mood, my thoughts, things that are going on in the lives of people I know, things that are happening in the world etcetera.I write to people that I personally know, my friends, family, people that I admirer, people that I love (I don't do hatemail) or the people who support me and my work. Which is something you can do too.

Why do we like some animals - even see them as part of our families - and others not?

I think the answer mainly lies in our capability of humanizing an animal. If we can imagine ourself that a certain animal has a character, feelings, a gender etc etc. our brain tells us: this is a human being. And when it is small, has big eyes and it's fluffy, we see it as a little baby. So, so far for a short lesson in psychology in how we emphatise with (some) animals.
Well, what if you change this? What happens when you change the looks of an animal that (in our eyes) usually has no personality, no feelings and
no gender? In my project SAVE THE SNAILS I did just that. and guess what happened...
People wanted to 'resque' the snails. Stole snails out of the exhibitions. Started petitions. Wrote articles on how cruel it was to use animals for a piece of art. - Did all kind of things to protect the exact same animals as they would usually poisen when found in their gardens. —> for the record. no animals were harmed in here. I used special glue and light weight materials. None of the snails bothered their new looks.
They just kept on being snails. The only difference was that people started to see them as 'persons' and with that, people felt that THESE snails could never be killed. So yes, I saved the snails by changing the way people saw them.

This is me in 'my studio' at artschool (Fontys BKVB Tilburg) in the year 2001. The studio was actually just a tiny corner in a classroom.
Most of my classmates were away doing internships as art teachers, but I didn't want to teach: I only wanted to work on my own artpieces. This is why I never fully graduated at (this) artschool. (later I got a masters degree at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam) I also refused to follow theory classes. No art history for me and no theories on 'how to educate children' for me. Instead I arrived every morning around 8:30 and rarely left the academy before 9 or 10 pm (closing time) and worked my ass off in this tiny corner.

This piece is called the 'Popple' and it is named after a childrens toy
from the 80's: a teddybear which, if you turned it inside out,
transformed into a ball.
My piece 'The Popple' was made of a (taxidermied) dog that, when you
turned it inside out, transformed into a (taxidermied) cat. So The
Popple ables you to choose your favorite kind of pet over and over again.

The Popple is part of my Baby bunny project in which I created toys made
out of real animal(skin)s. What I wanted to illustrate was the huge pet
industry in which people are breeding pets more and more 'perfect'.
And with 'perfect', I mean perfect for breeders and owners, as an eye
catcher. But for the pets it's absolutely the opposite. They are used as
objects. As toys.
Which brought me to make these series.

No other article that was written on me and my work has brought me as much joy as this one. The writer, Rutger Pontzen keeps repeating in @de_volkskrant why I shouldnt get any attention and why my work is nothing more than ‘animal cruelty’. But in his madnes he forgot to discribe the actual work and he did exactly what shouldnt happen (according to him): giving me lots of attention.
About half a year later I organised another exhibition which I gave the title ‘please Rutger, give me another star!) using this article as my invitation letter.
Later he told me that he actually thought that I was brilliant. 🙃

When I wrote my book ‘Dangers of fear - hypochondria in Fukushima’ I honestly didn’t knew anything about the world of nuclear experts. Also I had never heard of a magazine called ‘kernvisie’. But it’s all there and this (to me) new world seems to appreciate my work in Fukushima and my book on the situation after the nuclear disaster lots. I feel honored and flattered and very very happy :) ps: Right now my book is only available in Dutch (‘Het gevaar van angst’ published by @atlascontact) but will soon be translated to English and hopefully also to Japanese. ❤️☢️

In 2012 I did a talk at @tedxamsterdam The title was ‘everything is permitted’ but it was basically about the origin and the spreading of fake news and how I and my work are affected by this. At that time (only 6 yrs ago!) people saw my story as an exception, but today we all know that the word ‘exception’ should be replaced by ‘beginning’. Next week @tedxamsterdam celebrates her #bigX, a ten year anniversary, and I am very proud to announce that I will be interviewed during the event, twice! and I am featured in a wonderful film made by @rosaklamer.
I will again speak about a situation in which ‘the news’ can not be trusted. But this time the cause is not anger, but fear. The conclusion, however, is still the same. - oh yes, I wrote books on both cases! One is called Dearest TINKEBELL, and the other one is called Dangers of fear - hypochondria in Fukushima (in Dutch: Het gevaar van angst - hypochonderen in Fukushima)

Back in time. In the past 20 years I've done so many projects, traveled the world to amazing places and met the most wonderful people whom sometimes became friends for life. Sometimes when I browse to the files on my computer I 'find' projects that I totally forgot about.
Yesterday I took the time to scroll through my old photos to select a few images for a new website that is in the making for the TINKEBELL. foundation (www.tinkebellfoundation.nl) and it felt a bit like
timetraveling to the past. But allthough I treasure all that I've done, In the meantime I can't wait to make more memories and create tons of new artprojects.
